Happy May! I recently learned of this opportunity through my IDEO network.
Smith College and its Design Thinking Initiative seek a Prototyping Studio Manager to oversee its maker spaces, mentor students in their creative pursuits, and foster connections across disciplines and the maker community (at Smith and beyond).
The team, led by Emily Norton, hopes to find someone who is generous, curious, kind, patient, and creative with a maker spirit who is willing to tinker with machines, experiment with new materials, and teach/learn new technologies and techniques.
What I love
Smith is among the largest women’s colleges in the US, with students from 48 states and 68 countries. It was founded at a time (1871) when there were practically no choices for women who wanted an education and has a long history of educating women for social change. More here.
The Design Thinking Initiative began as a pilot program launched in 2015 by a group of faculty from *across disciplines* to incorporate design methods, mindsets and practices into interdisciplinary work across new and existing classes, and to support student- and faculty-led design projects.
Empowering making as a full-time job - what a joy! Note that Smith has a collection of maker spaces across campus (see its Maker’s Map).
And the role includes some leadership stretch, i.e., management of student studio design partner interns.
Tip!
You can get a nice overview of the team’s work via it’s Design Thinking Initiative FY20 Annual Report.
