Local government practices need to reflect the century we’re in, but all too often they don’t. This is where ICMA comes in. Led by former Austin City Manager, Marc Ott, its team brings emerging and innovative governance practices to 13K members who are local government leaders, managers, staff, and stakeholders in the U.S. and abroad. The management decisions made by these professionals affect millions of lives in thousands of communities throughout the world.
ICMA is currently accepting resumes for a Program Director, Senior Program Manager, and Assistant Program Manager for the startup and implementation of a recently awarded, 5-year “Environmental Justice Thriving Communities” Technical Assistance Center funded by the US EPA to ensure communities have direct access to grant programs that will help them advance environmental justice (one of 17 centers to be launched across the US). You can read more about this EPA program here.
What I love about these roles is that you’d be in startup mode, focused on underserved communities, with a new team, on a project with sizeable funding, in a future-facing work environment. I also like the community-level learning, empathy-building, and networking you’d get to do as part of your direct service work with local, tribal and state governments, non-profits, and grassroots orgs, e.g., What are their pain points? How are they approaching problem-solving? What’s working? What’s not? Who are the players? You’d also get to do a deep dive into the subject of environmental justice. And kick the tire of what it’s really like to be a local government leader - valuable if you’re thinking about this possibility for your future self!
Don’t forget to build your network as you job hunt!
