45 million Americans are suffering under the weight of $1.7 trillion of student loan debt. Every 26 seconds, one of these borrowers defaults on their loan. Two-thirds of this debt is held by women. Do these facts make you want to take a stand?
If so, the U.S. Student Borrower Protection Center (SBPC) is scouting talent to help lead a nationwide effort to end the student debt crisis. The org’s team of attorneys, policy experts, and consumer advocates are focused on halting industry abuses, expanding borrower protections, and reforming the student loan system.
In the role of Coordinator, you’ll report to the Director of Advocacy, Bonnie Latreille, and support the org’s advocacy function, state legislative work, and Civil Rights Project. You bring to this role 1-2 years of experience in national or state organizing, advocacy, or government relations (among other quals). Salary is $55-$65K.
What I love
This is a start-up with a BIG social mission. Think rolled sleeves, think fast paced, think David and Goliath kind of action!
The org’s leader, Seth Frotman, is a national expert. You’re sure to learn a lot from him (and Bonnie). Note: both Seth and Bonnie hail from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a U.S. government agency dedicated to making sure that banks, lenders, and other financial companies treat Americans fairly. An awesome training ground for their current leadership work.
The project you’ll be focused on, the Civil Rights Project, sounds like a resume-builder. You’ll be working to expose the effects of student debt on communities of color and show how predatory practices in the market are exacerbating existing racial and economic disparities.
SBPC will consider applicants from any location in the continental US and may be able to accommodate a remote work arrangement on a case-by-case basis.
Don’t forget…
You can follow this org, read about its team, and follow the team members whose profiles inspire you - a great way to build your social impact scenius!
