I read about this opportunity before going to bed last night and couldn’t WAIT to get up to tell you about it! (Thank you, Rob Reich, for flagging such interesting jobs.)
Michael Tubbs is a 2012 graduate of Stanford. Born and raised in Stockton, California, he became the city’s first Black mayor before he turned 30, receiving an endorsement from President Obama. He is a rising star in politics, and currently serves as a special adviser to California Governor, Gavin Newsom.
Tubbs is widely known for championing the idea of a guaranteed income, and he led one of the most important experiments in delivering such an income to his city’s residents called The Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration (SEED).
SEED gave 125 randomly selected residents $500/month for 24 months. The cash was unconditional, no strings attached, no work requirements. Aiming to test a simple yet innovative solution to poverty and inequality, SEED’s preliminary findings show that this small, monthly sum reduced income volatility and enabled recipients to find full-time employment and pursue new opportunities, boosting health and happiness.
Tubbs is now leading an org that he founded while mayor called Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, a coalition of more than 40 US Mayors (and growing) who are advocating for a guaranteed income in their cities.
To help him execute his ambitious agenda, Tubbs is searching for a highly organized, independent, detail-oriented, jack of all trades to be his Executive Assistant. You are mission-aligned and have 2+ years of advanced administrative experience (among other quals).
What I love
This big idea - guaranteed income - is controversial but exciting to explore as the US grapples with pandemic recovery and pre-pandemic wealth and income inequality that only continues to grow.
You would learn SOOOOO much from Michael and his peers! Not only about this particular big idea but about how to mobilize people and a create movement around any big idea. Change by movement (vs change by mandate) is how lasting social change happens.
Given Michael’s vision and entrepreneurial spirit, your work life would likely never be dull. And I’m guessing there would be room for you to grow in this startup organization, beyond the role of EA.
Don’t forget…
You can follow this org, read about its team, and follow the team members whose profiles inspire you - a great way to build your social impact scenius!
